Tracy McEneaney and Jenny Loughran from Waterford Libraries visited St. Mary’s National School, Ballygunner in Waterford this week to present 181 certificates and medals to pupils who completed the Summer Stars Reading Challenge. 25% of all the pupils in Ballygunner School completed the reading challenge this year.

Due to the high number of medals and certificates received by children at the school, a News2Day reporting team of Damien Tiernan and Neilus Dennehy from RTE, visited the school to film. Mr. O’Sullivan’s 3rd Class were the lucky class chosen to appear on the programme.

During September schools across Waterford City and County will be visited by their local librarians and more than 1500 medals and certificates will be presented to school children all across the county.

The Summer Stars Reading Challenge is part of the national Right to Read Programme, which provides literacy support and reading development in all local authorities.
