Occasions of Sin: Sex and Society in Modern Ireland
Diarmaid Ferriter returns to Central Library for Heritage Week

As part of Waterford Libraries Heritage Week celebrations, Central Library is delighted to welcome back one of Ireland’s best-know historians, Diarmaid Ferriter, who will speak on Occasions of Sin: Sex and Society in Modern Ireland on Wednesday 22 August at 6:00pm.

In this lecture Diarmaid Ferriter charts the Irish sexual experience over the course of the twentieth century, examining the control of sexuality by church and state in Ireland. He explores Ireland’s repressive approach to sexuality, strongly influenced by the dominance of the Catholic Church.

Diarmaid Ferriter is Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD. His books include: The Transformation of Ireland 1900-2000 (2004), Judging Dev: A Reassessment of the life and legacy of Eamon de Valera (2007) and Occasions of Sin: Sex and Society in Modern Ireland (2009). His most recent book, A Nation and not a Rabble: The Irish Revolution 1913-1923 was published in 2015. He is a regular broadcaster on television and radio and a weekly columnist with the Irish Times.
