Donal Ryan’s novel The Spinning Heart delves deep into the Irish psyche; the marginal voices of rural Ireland, the intensity of small-town divides, and the weight of the recession on family life. Many of the stories traverse familiar ground; nationalism, emigration, postcolonialism and Catholicism, all the aspects of Irish culture that shape Irish identity. Storytelling is an integral part of Irish life and writers like Donal Ryan serve as a valuable roadmap to the landscape of the national psyche, a psyche simultaneously bound to joy and melancholia.
