– Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning.
– It can affect memory, thinking speed, language, understanding, judgement, and the ability to perform daily activities.
– Dementia is not a natural part of ageing and is caused by diseases of the brain.
– Symptoms can worsen over time, and in late stages, individuals may become unable to care for themselves.
– Early diagnosis is important as it can help slow down the progression in some cases and allow for better management of the condition.
– Treatment and support can enable many people to lead active, fulfilled lives with dementia.
This 45 minute talk will look at the following aspects:
- Define how the brain and memory work
- Describe the difference between the terms dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease
- State the various types of dementia
- Distinguish between Delirium, Dementia and Depression (3Ds)
- Cite the symptoms of dementia
- Know how dementia is diagnosed
- Understand how the currently available drugs for dementia work
- Improve your own care for mind and body
- Be familiar with who can help you
