– Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning.

– It can affect memory, thinking speed, language, understanding, judgement, and the ability to perform daily activities.

– Dementia is not a natural part of ageing and is caused by diseases of the brain.

– Symptoms can worsen over time, and in late stages, individuals may become unable to care for themselves.

– Early diagnosis is important as it can help slow down the progression in some cases and allow for better management of the condition.

– Treatment and support can enable many people to lead active, fulfilled lives with dementia.

This 45 minute talk will look at the following aspects:

  1. Define how the brain and memory work
  2. Describe the difference between the terms dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease
  3. State the various types of dementia
  4. Distinguish between Delirium, Dementia and Depression (3Ds)
  5. Cite the symptoms of dementia
  6. Know how dementia is diagnosed
  7. Understand how the currently available drugs for dementia work
  8. Improve your own care for mind and body
  9. Be familiar with who can help you
