Mar chuid de Sheachtain na Gaeilge, fiosraíonn An tOir. Daniel Fleming scéal iontach Bíobla Bedell, an chéad aistriúchán den Tiomna Nua go Gaeilge. Scrúdaítear sa chaint tionscadal ceannródaíoch an Easpaig William Bedell ón seachtú haois déag chun an scrioptúr a chur ar fáil i nGaeilge, agus é a chur laistigh dá chomhthéacs reiligiúnach agus cultúrtha níos leithne. Cíoraíonn sé freisin marthanas an Bhíobla trí na céadta bliain suaite agus déanann sé measúnú ar thábhacht an Bhíobla mar shainchomhartha i stair theangeolaíoch agus eaglasta na hÉireann. Críochnaíonn an cur i láthair leis an scéal faoin gcéad eagrán neamhchoitianta de Bhíobla Bedell a fháil do Leabharlann Cotton in Ardeaglais Naomh Chárthaigh, Lios Mór, in 2020.
As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Rev Daniel Fleming explores the remarkable story of the Bedell Bible, the first translation of the New Testament into Irish. The talk examines Bishop William Bedell’s pioneering seventeenth-century project to make scripture accessible in the Irish language, placing it within its wider religious and cultural context. It also traces the Bible’s survival through turbulent centuries and considers its significance as a landmark in Irish linguistic and ecclesiastical history. The presentation concludes with the story of the acquisition of a rare first edition for the Cotton Library at St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore, in 2020.
