From Waterford to the World – Edward Phelan’s Journey to International Diplomacy
Join Gerry Finnegan to discover the significant roles two Irish diplomats played in the development of international relations and multilateralism at the beginning of the twentieth century. Tramore-born Edward Phelan, along with his Northern Irish colleague Seán Lester, were pivotal figures in the formation of League of Nations and ILO respectively. Based on his book, The Irish Influence: Building the League of Nations and the International Labour Organization, Gerry Finnegan will present a talk in which will trace the career and legacy of Edward Phelan. This talk will reveal how important a part a small independent state like Ireland played – and could continue to play – in progressive international relations.
