Ardkeen Library is delighted to welcome historian and author, Cian Manning, for a talk on “Crime & Punishment: Conmen & Criminals from Urbs Intacta” on Tuesday 31st March at 6:30pm as part of it’s Tuesday Night Talks series.
A selection of scandalous stories connected to Suirside, from biographical sketches of swindlers and scoundrels to case studies of crooked escapades and prison escapes, we look at the life, times and crimes of individuals whose stories touched Urbs Intacta and even further afield.
Covering a conman, a career criminal and a serial swindler, we’ll explore these lives of crime as well as the impact they had on the locality and on their victims. Encompassing bogus preaching, petty thieving and pretences of fortune-telling, Crime & Punishment not only looks at the conviction of these individuals’ endeavours, but also how society deemed justice to be or have been served. The latter, a matter that will resonate with us all even to this day.
Cian Manning is a regular contributor to Ireland’s Own, the Munster Express, as well as WLR FM. His most recent book, ‘I Love Me County’: Waterford Sporting Stories, was published by History Press in 2024.
