This year Waterford Libraries will run the Summer Stars Reading Adventure in all of our branches from June to August 2026.
Summer Stars is a free national programme that encourages children to read for fun during the school holidays. Every child can take part and enjoy reading books, audiobooks, picture books, graphic novels, whatever they like to read, at their own pace. A special Summer Stars collection is also available on BorrowBox, the free library app offering eBooks and audiobooks to all library members. Children can track their reading and take part in a wide range of events and activities that will be held across library branches in Waterford to celebrate Summer Stars.
For event and activity highlights, and for further information see our Events Page and check out our social media:

Each child is invited to register for the adventure at their library and will be given Summer Stars Reading Card to record and track their progress.
At the end of the challenge, children return their reading card to their local Library. The closing date for return of Reading Cards is August 24th 2026.
During the autumn, children will receive their Summer Stars medal and certificate of achievement in school.
Summer Stars is part of the Right to Read Programme. The programme promotes literacy and reading development for children, families and individuals of all ages. It is delivered by the public library services of local authorities, coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
