Life in a Gentry House in Kilmeaden, 1898 – 1913.
Talk by Dr. Rachel Finnegan at Ardkeen Library on Tuesday 27th May at 6:30 PM.
This talk offers a vivid glimpse into the early married life of Judith Isobel Chavasse (1867–1935), based on a rich collection of her diaries. Following her 1895 marriage to Henry (Hal) Chavasse, Judith became mistress of Whitfield Court, an elegant Italianate villa in Kilmeaden, County Waterford. There, she raised four sons and embraced the responsibilities of domestic, social, and spiritual life expected of the Anglo-Irish gentry. The talk explores Judith’s roles as wife, mother, and friend, highlighting her philanthropic and religious commitments and offering a unique window into the daily rhythms of an upper-class woman in early 20th-century Ireland.
