Waterford City & County Council’s Arts Office is pleased to announce that the winner of the national Molly Keane Creative Writing Award 2022 is Bernadette Furlong, Caim, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford with her short story ‘The Den’.
Bernadette receives a cash prize and a writing course at the Molly Keane Writers Retreat, Ardmore to a total value of €500. Bernadette and her husband share a cottage in the Wexford countryside with four cats and several libraries of books. She is an admirer of Japanese literature, true crime and horror plus the work of Angela Carter, Eimear McBride and Han Kang, she is currently working on a novel.
‘The Den’ is the twenty fifth winner of the Molly Keane Creative Writing Award run by Waterford City & County Council’s Arts Office with support from the Arts Council and by kind permission of the Keane family. ‘The Den’ was announced as the winner on Culture Night and the winning story can be heard on Waterford In Your Pocket Facebook page and is also available as a podcast and on YouTube at https://youtu.be/Oek7aV7vj2o
Margaret Organ, Arts Officer thanked all the entrants and judges for their work. She said that after 25 years it was good to keep the name of Molly Keane to the forefront and to stimulate new writing under such a strong literary name.
